December 2021 met Super Typhoon Odette who severely impacted areas in the coastal communities of Surigao del Norte, Dinagat Islands, Southern Leyte, Bohol, and Cebu. The Humanitarian Needs and Priorities (HNP) reported that the extent of the impact estimated a count of 2.4 out of the 16 million inhabitants where 530,000 were targeted for assistance. Transport has been identified as a significant obstacle for women in accessing health services and has further deteriorated due to the impact of the typhoon on the overall economic situation of the communities.
The Philippine Society for Responsible Parenthood Inc. (PSRP) with funding and technical support from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID Philippines), is implementing the Cash Voucher Assistance (CVA) modality for continued access of women and girls to sexual and reproductive health services in Southern Leyte. 600 women and girls are provided CVAs for transportation and food while 250 postpartum mothers are given maternal and neonatal CVAs. Accommodation vouchers are provided to 60 women and girls with obstetric complications needing emergency referrals or require close monitoring and proximity to acute care services and cesarean delivery.
The CVA recipients were selected by the Rural Health Units of Bontoc, Limasawa, Maasin, Pintuyan, St. Bernard and Sogo from the province of Southern Leyte.
