Deployment of BEmONC Trained Nurses and Midwives in Southern Leyte

SRH Response to Typhoon Rai (Odette)

Super Typhoon Odette severely impacted areas in the coastal communities of Surigao del Norte, Dinagat Islands, Southern Leyte, Bohol, and Cebu last December 2021. An estimated count of 2.4 out of the 16 million inhabitants felt the impact and 530,000 of which were in need of assistance as reported by the Humanitarian Needs and Priorities (HNP). Shortage of healthcare workers were identified in some health facilities affecting the provision of sexual and reproductive health services.

The Philippine Society for Responsible Parenthood Inc. (PSRP), with funding and technical support from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID Philippines, continues to address the needs of women and adolescents from the typhoon-affected areas. The course of action is through supporting the improvement of the quality and life-saving Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (BEmONC) services. And because health personnel shortages in some health facilities were identified to hinder the provision of health services (including SRH), 7 nurses and 7 midwives who were trained on BEmONC were deployed to the selected project sites namely: Bontoc RHU, Limasawa RHU, Pintuyan District Hospital, Sogod District Hospital, Salvacion Oppus Yñiguez Memorial Provincial Hospital (SOYMPH) in Maasin, and St. Bernard RHU.

The tables below summarize the client reached by the deployed BEmONC trained nurses and midwives.
